Age ratings and why we ask for your date of birth
Every film on Mosion carries an age classification from the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), the body responsible for classifying films for distribution and exhibition in Nigeria. This page explains what each classification means, how we check that a film is suitable for you, and exactly what we do with the date of birth you give us when you create an account.
What the classifications mean
The NFVCB uses seven classifications. You will see the classification on every film's details page, and on the home screen for featured titles.
- G (General) – Suitable for all audiences. Contains nothing that would harm or disturb any age group, including young children.
- PG (Parental Guidance) – General viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children. Parents are advised to watch with younger children.
- 12 – Suitable only for persons of 12 years and over.
- 12A – Suitable for 12 years and over. Younger children may watch when accompanied by a responsible adult who has judged the content appropriate for them.
- 15 – Suitable only for persons of 15 years and over. May include stronger language, themes or references.
- 18 – Suitable only for adults aged 18 and over. May include adult themes, strong language, nudity or violence.
- RE (Restricted Exhibition) – Restricted to controlled exhibition settings for a specialised adult audience.
Mosion does not assign these classifications. They are set by the NFVCB, and we display and enforce the classification a film has been given.
Why we ask for your date of birth
Because films are classified by age, we need to know your age to know which films we can show you. We ask for your date of birth once, when you create your account, and use it to work out whether you meet the minimum age for a given classification.
We ask for a date of birth rather than a yes/no age confirmation because it is a single, accurate answer that stays correct as you get older. A tick-box saying "I am over 18" would need re-asking for every different age threshold, and tells us nothing about whether a 15-rated film is appropriate for you.
How the age check works
The check happens on our servers, not in the app, so it applies consistently however you watch – on the web, on your phone, or on your TV.
- You can browse the full catalogue and see every film's classification, whatever your age.
- If you are below the minimum age for a film, you will not be able to buy or watch it, and we will tell you the classification and the age it requires.
- We block the purchase before any payment is taken, so you are never charged for a film you would not be able to watch.
- If you already bought a film before its classification changed, that purchase is honoured and stays in your library.
If you created your account before we asked for this
Accounts created before we introduced age classification do not have a date of birth on file. If that applies to you, nothing changes for most of the catalogue – you can keep browsing, buying and watching as before.
The first time you open a film rated 18 or RE, we will ask you to confirm your date of birth. Once you have given it, the film is available if you meet the age requirement. We only ask at that point, rather than interrupting you at sign-in.
What we do with your date of birth
Your date of birth is personal data, and we handle it under the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 (NDPA) on the same terms as the rest of your account information. Our full Privacy Policy explains your rights in detail.
- We use it only to determine which classifications you can watch. We do not use it for advertising, profiling or recommendations.
- We do not sell it or share it with third parties for their own purposes.
- It is stored with your account and protected the same way as the rest of your account data.
- It is not shown on your public profile and is not visible to other users.
- It is deleted when you delete your account, along with the rest of your account data.
Your date of birth is recorded once and cannot be changed from within the app. This is deliberate: if it could be edited freely, the age check it exists to perform would mean nothing. If you entered it incorrectly, email [email protected] and we will correct it for you.
For parents and guardians
If a child uses your account, the classification we apply is the one for the date of birth on that account – so an adult's account will not restrict what a child watching it can see. If children use Mosion in your home, we recommend setting them up with their own account, and using the device-level parental controls provided by iOS, Android, or your TV platform alongside the classifications shown here.
12A is the one classification that depends on your judgement rather than ours: it means a younger child may watch if you are watching with them and consider the film suitable.
Questions or a rating that looks wrong
If you think a film on Mosion is showing the wrong classification, please tell us at [email protected] and we will check it against the NFVCB's classification and correct it if needed. Questions about the classification system itself, or about a decision the Board has made, are best directed to the NFVCB.
